March 2020

Clients and friends,

These are unsettling and rapidly changing times. No doubt your firm is grappling with disruptions that would have been difficult to foresee just weeks ago.

It’s extra challenging right now to plan for the long-term future, so this month instead of my usual letter, I’m offering an article entitled “Prospering in the Private Sector” from the current issue of Engineering Inc. magazine, published quarterly by ACEC (the American Council of Engineering Companies).

The article, in which I’m quoted, recommends that design firms—especially those that are centered primarily around public sector clients—should also be diversified in private sector markets. While the article was originally written for engineering firms, I believe the concepts are equally applicable to architecture firms.

Strategic market diversification is key to a firm’s stability and sustainability, including in uncertain times. If you have thoughts about this, I’d love to hear from you at rkogan@kogancompany.com.
